Heiti verkefnis: Complexes of calixarenes, cyclodextrins and linear dextrins as drug delivery vehicles (vectors).

Stutt lýsing á verkefninu: The Ph.D. project involves determination of the solubilizing effect/complexation capabilities of calixarenes and linear dextrins.  About 20 different drugs of different physicochemical properties will be selected for this study, based on their molecular weight, aqueous solubility, lipophilicity and ionization.  The effects of various excipients will be investigated, e.g. water-soluble polymers and organic and inorganic salts and solvents.  All these excipients are known to affect cyclodextrin solubilization of drugs. Then the ability of calixarenes, linear dextrins and their complexes to self-aggregate to form nanoparticles will be investigated. The abilities of calixarenes and linear dextrins to enhance drug delivery through biological membranes will be investigated in vitro using artificial membranes as well as cornea and mucosa. Finally, selected systems will be tested in animal models.  For example, ophthalmic drug delivery will be tested in rabbits, and systemic delivery will be tested in rats.
